What comes after revenge, when old loyalties pull a familiar hero into a Paris alive with revolution?
In Edmond Dantès, Edmund Flagg returns to the world of Alexandre Dumas’s The Count of Monte-Cristo. His hero carries a past bound up with injustice, patience, and reckoning. This adventure asks what becomes of such a man after his great plan is done—and what might still call him forward.
The streets of Paris provide the stage, with revolution shaping the world around Dantès. Love and old loyalties sit beside political conflict, while redemption offers a quieter concern. For readers drawn to the original story, the invitation is simple: follow a familiar name beyond that last page, into new trouble.

A calm sea becomes a wrecking storm
The story begins at dawn on the yacht Alcyon. The Count watches the Isle of Monte-Cristo shrink behind him, where Maximilian Morrel and Valentine de Villefort stand waving. He tells Haydée that God made the young pair happy and that he was only an instrument. He adds that he regrets taking vengeance into his own hands.
On the evening of October 15 he offers Haydée her freedom before he marries her. She accepts it only so she can give herself to him by choice. Lightning flashes in a cloudless sky, and he calls it the seal of God on their betrothal.

What is Edmond Dantès by Edmund Flagg about?
It continues the story of the Count of Monte-Cristo as he sails away with Haydée. He becomes a radical deputy in Paris, spends his fortune on reform, guides the 1848 revolution and faces a secret that threatens his son and daughter.
Do you need to read The Count of Monte-Cristo first?
It helps, because many characters return, such as Mercédès, Beauchamp, Debray and Albert de Morcerf. Even so, the book explains the main events of the earlier story through memories and conversation, so new readers can follow it.
Is Edmond Dantès based on real history?
The characters from Dumas are invented, but the setting is real. The book follows the revolution of February 1848 in Paris, with real figures such as Lamartine, Louis Blanc, Marrast, Guizot and King Louis Philippe.
