Behind the novels stands a woman worrying about money, missing friends, and finding room to write.
In Charlotte Brontë and Her Circle, Clement King Shorter brings you into the Yorkshire parsonage and the lives around it. Letters, linked by notes and comment, reveal the author of Jane Eyre, Shirley and Villette as a daughter, sister, friend and working woman. Her concerns are concrete: health, money, duty and the wish to write.
At the heart of the book is Charlotte’s friendship with Ellen Nussey, which begins at Roe Head school and continues through their letters. Elsewhere, teaching and work as a governess press against her literary hopes. As Charlotte and her sisters enter print under the names Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, they seek protection from judgments about women writers.

Mrs. Gaskell's biography left much unsaid
Mrs. Gaskell published her Life of Charlotte Brontë in 1857, two years after Charlotte died. Mr. Brontë chose her himself, and she worked hard. She visited Haworth, Cowan Bridge and Brussels, and she wrote to Charlotte's old friends for their letters.
The book also stirred up trouble. Mr. Brontë disliked the tales of his bad temper. The worst error concerned Branwell and Mrs. Robinson. Mrs. Gaskell accepted his claim of a love affair, and no proof of it existed. A retraction appeared in the Times in May 1857.

What is Charlotte Brontë and Her Circle about?
It is a biography built from letters. Clement Shorter gathers Charlotte Brontë's own letters and those of her family and friends to tell her life, from her parents' courtship to her death in 1855.
Who was in Charlotte Brontë's circle?
The circle includes her father Patrick, her sisters Emily and Anne, her brother Branwell, friends Ellen Nussey and Mary Taylor, teacher Miss Wooler, publisher W. S. Williams, George Smith, Mrs. Gaskell and Charlotte's husband Arthur Bell Nicholls.
Why did Shorter write a book after Mrs. Gaskell's Life of Charlotte Brontë?
Forty years had passed, and new letters had come to light, especially from Ellen Nussey and Mr. Nicholls. Shorter adds fresh material and corrects mistakes, such as the story of Branwell and Mrs. Robinson.
