책 소개

What happens when a mother who lives in fear begins to listen to forbidden ideas?

In a factory settlement in Tsarist Russia, Pelageya Nilovna Vlasova knows work, prayer and silence. A poor widow, she wants only to protect her son. But Pavel reads forbidden books and brings friends into their home. Their quiet evenings of reading, talk and song open a world she both fears and wants to understand.

Maxim Gorky's Mother follows Pelageya as concern for Pavel draws her toward the workers around him. Andrei Onisimov offers kindness; Nikolai Ivanovich brings books and patient guidance. As workers begin to organise and factory management cuts their wages, she faces a growing question: can she protect her son without listening to what he stands for?
