What do people ask of their gods when health, home and harvest feel uncertain?

Sumerian Hymns from Cuneiform Texts gathers ancient devotional poetry from southern Mesopotamia, the land of the earliest cities. Frederick Augustus Vanderburgh brings readers close to songs preserved in wedge-shaped writing on clay tablets. Here, worshippers praise divine powers and ask for mercy, protection and forgiveness.

The collection opens a window onto worship shaped by sky, storm, sun, water and grain. Its songs of praise and prayers for help belong to temples, festivals and offerings, rather than private reading. Their repeated lines invite you to imagine a priest or gathered group speaking them aloud.
