A gambler trains a frog, a calm stranger starts talking, and common sense quietly leaves the room.
In Mark Twain’s Sketches New and Old, tall tales sit beside hoaxes, mock sermons and domestic comedy. The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County brings you into a mining camp barroom, where Simon Wheeler corners a stranger with his story. At its heart are Jim Smiley, a man who bets on anything, and his carefully trained frog, Dan’l Webster.
Elsewhere, good boys and bad boys upset the rules of moral tales, newspaper men mistake confidence for knowledge, and Mrs. McWilliams fills her home with worry over a child’s health. A Medieval Romance turns noble houses, hidden identities and secret plots into parody. Through it all, Twain’s speakers deliver absurd things in calm, reasonable tones—and leave the laughter to you.

A helpful repair can ruin a good watch
The first sketch, My Watch, is about a machine that works until someone fixes it. The narrator owns a new watch that runs for eighteen months without gaining or losing a minute. One night it runs down, and he sets it by guess. A jeweler tells him it is four minutes slow and pushes the regulator, and the trouble starts.
At once the watch begins to gain, until it is thirteen days ahead of the almanac. A watchmaker says it needs cleaning and oiling, and afterward it ticks like a tolling bell. A second man says a part is swelled. A third finds a broken king-bolt, and the owner says he is glad, though he has no idea what a king-bolt is.

What is Sketches New and Old about?
It is a mix of short comic pieces by Mark Twain, gathered in 1875. They include tall tales, hoaxes, speeches and spoofs of newspapers, politicians, tourists and moral books, from the Jumping Frog to the lightning-rod salesman.
Who is Simon Wheeler in the Jumping Frog story?
Simon Wheeler is a talkative old man dozing in a tavern in Angel's Camp. The narrator asks about one Smiley, and Wheeler answers with a story about another, Jim Smiley, told in a flat, serious voice.
Is Sketches New and Old a true story?
Mostly no. The sketches are invented tall tales and satires, though some play on real events, such as the Cardiff Giant hoax and the 1862 petrified man joke. Twain wrote them in the 1860s and early 1870s and collected them in 1875.
