Behind the novels stands a woman worrying about money, missing friends, and finding room to write.

In Charlotte Brontë and Her Circle, Clement King Shorter brings you into the Yorkshire parsonage and the lives around it. Letters, linked by notes and comment, reveal the author of Jane Eyre, Shirley and Villette as a daughter, sister, friend and working woman. Her concerns are concrete: health, money, duty and the wish to write.

At the heart of the book is Charlotte’s friendship with Ellen Nussey, which begins at Roe Head school and continues through their letters. Elsewhere, teaching and work as a governess press against her literary hopes. As Charlotte and her sisters enter print under the names Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, they seek protection from judgments about women writers.
