전쟁과 평화 in short

War and Peace follows a handful of Russian families through the years of Napoleon's wars. It begins in a Petersburg salon in 1805, moves through the defeat at Austerlitz, and carries its characters through love, loss and scandal. By 1812 the invasion draws Pierre and Andrew toward Borodino and overturns the lives of their families.

What 전쟁과 평화 is about

What does it take to see a whole nation at once, from the drawing room to the battlefield? Leo Tolstoy sets out to do exactly that in War and Peace. The book opens in July 1805 in Saint Petersburg, at a soirée where fashionable guests trade opinions on Napoleon, and a clumsy young man named Pierre shocks everyone by defending him.

Tolstoy wrote this vast novel in the 1860s, looking back at Russia's wars with Napoleon. He follows the Rostovs, the Bolkonskis and the Kuragins, along with Pierre, a rich man who cannot find his purpose. You also meet the questions Tolstoy keeps asking. Who really moves history? How should a person live?

이런 분께 적합해요. This book suits readers who love big family stories, vivid battle scenes and questions about how to live a good life. It rewards anyone curious about Russia, Napoleon's wars, or how love, duty and chance shape ordinary people.

The story in 10 parts

A soirée in Petersburg opens the story

The novel begins in July 1805 at the salon of Anna Pavlovna Scherer, a lady of the court. Her fashionable guests talk about Napoleon, whom she calls the Antichrist, and about the war that is coming. Prince Vasili Kuragin is there, smooth and scheming, wanting good matches for his children. Marriage in this room is a matter of money and rank.

Then Pierre arrives. He is the large, awkward, illegitimate son of the dying Count Bezukhov, just home from years of study abroad. He breaks the rules of the room by defending Napoleon out loud, and the guests glance at one another.

Prince Andrew Bolkonski, bored with his pregnant wife Lise, supports Pierre mildly. Afterward he begs Pierre never to marry, calling his own marriage a trap. Soon Pierre joins a drunken night with the rake Anatole and Dolokhov, and it ends in scandal. A policeman is tied to a bear, and the three men are sent away from the capital.

Tolstoy begins with talk and appetite, because the great events to come will fall on people already formed in rooms like these.

전쟁과 평화에 관한 질문

What is War and Peace about?

It follows three Russian families, the Rostovs, the Bolkonskis and the Kuragins, along with Pierre Bezukhov, through the years of Napoleon's wars. It joins love stories and family life with scenes of battle and a debate on history.

Who are the main characters in War and Peace?

The central figures are Pierre Bezukhov, Prince Andrew Bolkonski and Natasha Rostova. Around them stand Nicholas Rostov, Princess Mary, the Kuragins and real historical figures such as Kutuzov, Emperor Alexander and Napoleon.

Is War and Peace a true story?

The main characters are invented, but the wars are real. Tolstoy wrote it in the 1860s about the Russian campaigns of 1805 to 1812, and he places real leaders and battles such as Austerlitz and Borodino in the story.

Is War and Peace hard to read?

The prose is clear and the scenes are short and lively, each built around a person or a moment. You can follow the families one scene at a time, and the essays on history come as separate passages.

What is the main message of War and Peace?

Tolstoy argues that history is shaped by countless ordinary people, not by great men alone. He also suggests that a good life comes from love, family, simple faith and honest contact with the world.
