바이킹 이야기 in short

Viking Tales is a chain of stories about people who cannot stay put. A boy king of Norway, urged on by a proud girl, unites a divided land. Those who will not kneel sail west.

What 바이킹 이야기 is about

Picture a ten-year-old boy who drinks his dead father's funeral ale, takes the high seat, and swears to grind his father's enemies beneath his heel. Now picture a proud young woman who says she will not marry a king who rules so few people. From that single dare, a whole people begins to move across the sea.

Viking Tales was written by Jennie Hall, who drew on the old Icelandic sagas that skalds sang by the fire. The book follows the westward voyage of the Norsemen, from Harald of Norway to Iceland, Greenland and a green land of wild grapes.

이런 분께 적합해요. You will love this book if you enjoy dragon ships, mead halls and bold vows, or old legends told in clear, lively scenes. It suits readers curious about Vikings and the first voyages toward America.

The story in 9 parts

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

A king's son grows up on tales of gods

The book opens with a dream. The queen of King Halfdan sees a thorn grow in her fingers into a tall tree. Its trunk is red as blood, its lower branches are green, its highest branches are white, and its shade covers all Norway and more.

Soon a baby son is born. Halfdan names him Harald and gives him ten pounds of gold. At seven months, the king gives him lambs, calves and colts, and a thrall named Olaf.

Harald spends his days with Olaf, who is full of stories. Olaf tells of Thor, who breaks the hills with his hammer, and of Valhalla, Odin's hall with five hundred doors. Only warriors who die bravely may feast there.

Olaf also tells of old Aegir the Big-handed. Aegir is too old to die in battle and refuses to die in bed, so he leaps from a cliff with sword and shield raised. Harald looks over the same drop without turning pale. Olaf says a boy who can do that will not fear war.

A boy learns who he will be from the tales he hears at the fire.
