Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog) in short
Three Men in a Boat follows three friends and a dog on a fortnight's journey up the Thames. They begin as imaginary invalids and set out to cure themselves with fresh air. What they find is a string of small mishaps, from a cheese that empties railway carriages to a tin of pineapple that cannot be opened.
What Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog) is about
Four friends sit in a room, comparing their illnesses. The narrator recalls reading a medical handbook and finding he had every disease in it except housemaid's knee.
That is how Three Men in a Boat begins, and it begins with a laugh. Jerome K. Jerome published it in 1889. He meant it as a guide to the Thames, but the jokes took over. Three friends named George, Harris and J., who tells the story, cure their nerves with a fortnight on the water, with a fox terrier called Montmorency. You get the whole trip from Kingston to Oxford, with its muddles, its meals and its weather.

Three friends convince themselves they are dying
The book opens in the narrator's room, where four friends compare their ailments. George and Harris describe spells of dizziness. J. blames his liver, because he has just read a pill advertisement listing every symptom.
J. then tells of a visit to the British Museum, where he looked up hay fever and kept reading. He worked through the whole alphabet of diseases and decided he had every one except housemaid's knee. He felt almost insulted by the omission. His doctor writes a prescription the chemist cannot fill, for it calls for beefsteak, bitter beer and a ten-mile walk each morning.
The friends agree that overwork is to blame and that a complete change will cure them. A sea trip is dismissed, and George suggests the river. Montmorency objects, but the vote goes three to one. Most of what ails these men is a need for fresh air and good company.

How it ends (spoiler)
The weather turns cold and wet, and the friends row through two days of steady rain. Gloomy and soaked, they leave the boat in a boatman's care at Pangbourne and slip away by train to London. They see a show at the Alhambra, then eat a fine supper at a restaurant. Harris raises a glass to three men safely out of a boat, and Montmorency barks his agreement.
