화이트 몰 in short
The White Moll is the story of a woman whose kindness traps her in a double life. Rhoda Gray helps the poor and the lawless of New York's East Side until a dying woman's plea leaves her hunted by the police and bound to a gang she never meant to know. She hides in borrowed rags, learns the gang's code and risks her neck to save innocent people.
What 화이트 몰 is about
What would you do if a dying stranger made you swear an oath, then asked you to carry out what looks like a crime? That is the night that opens The White Moll. It changes the life of Rhoda Gray, a young American woman who helps thieves, pickpockets and their hungry families in the poorest streets of New York.
Frank L. Packard, a writer of crime and adventure fiction, built this tale as a fast chase through tenements, cellars and rooftops. You meet Rhoda, a policeman called Rough Rorke, a gang boss named Danglar, a reformed safecracker called the Sparrow, and a charming man who calls himself an adventurer. You also see how one small act of mercy can grow into a whole second life.
이런 분께 적합해요. If you love fast plots, secret identities, city nights lit by single streetlamps and a heroine who thinks her way out of danger, this book is for you.

A kindness earns Rhoda Gray her nickname
The book opens in a dark alley on the East Side, where a man snatches a purse from a girl. She calmly tells him to hand it back. He sees her face in the lamplight, touches his cap and returns the purse with an apology. She is the White Moll, and in this part of New York the name works like a shield.
Her real name is Rhoda Gray. Her father was a mining engineer, and she grew up with him in rough camps. In New York, a burglar named Pete McGee, known as the Bussard, broke into their apartment and was caught. He told a story of a sick wife and hungry children. Her father did not believe it. Rhoda did, and she found poverty exactly as the man had described.
The Bussard told his wife that Rhoda was white all the way through, and the underworld turned that into the White Moll. After her father died, helping the poor gave her a way through her grief.
Her goodness is her power, because even hardened criminals protect her. But it leaves her with no one to turn to when trouble comes. Kindness without judgment can build a safety no weapon matches.
