The Raven in short
The Raven tells one night in the life of a grieving man. He sits among old books at midnight in December, trying to forget his lost Lenore. A tapping draws him to the door, then to the window, and a raven steps in and perches on a bust of Pallas.
What The Raven is about
Picture a quiet room at midnight in the bleak December. A man sits over old books, worn out by grief, when a soft tapping comes at his chamber door. He opens it and finds only darkness. Then he opens the window, and something strange steps in.
This is The Raven, an eighteen-stanza poem by Edgar Allan Poe, first printed in 1845. It made him the most prominent author in America for a time. One man, one bird, and the memory of a woman named Lenore fill its whole drama. You get the story scene by scene, with its symbols explained and the sound that makes it stick in the ear.
이런 분께 적합해요. This is for listeners who love dark, atmospheric stories, rich sound and rhythm, Gothic mood, and short works that stay in the mind. It suits anyone who enjoys a refrain returning again and again.

A Midnight Tapping Interrupts a Grieving Reader
The poem begins at midnight, in the bleak December, with a man who cannot rest. He sits alone, weary in body and low in spirit, over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore. He is nearly napping when a gentle tapping starts, as if someone is softly rapping at his chamber door. Each dying ember in the fireplace throws its ghost upon the floor.
He hoped the books would bring surcease of sorrow, relief from his grief for Lenore. She is a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore. Here on earth she is nameless for evermore. The books fail him, and he wishes only for the morning.
Then the rustling of each purple curtain fills him with fantastic terrors never felt before. To still his beating heart, he repeats a plain explanation. Some visitor is entreating entrance at his chamber door, and that is all. He opens the door wide and finds only darkness. He whispers a single word, Lenore, and an echo murmurs it back to him.
The tapping comes again, louder, now at the window lattice. He decides it must be the wind and goes to see. A sound comes, a sensible guess follows, a check is made, and the emptiness only deepens the dread. A quiet room, a sound at night and a lost love are enough to set everything moving.

Characters, plot and themes
Main characters
- The Speaker A sleepless, grieving student of old books who mourns Lenore and wants either comfort or an answer from the strange visitor in his room.
- The Raven A stately black bird that enters from the night, perches above the door and answers every question with one word.
- Lenore The rare and radiant woman the speaker has lost, named by the angels, whose memory he cannot put down.
- Pallas A bust of the goddess of wisdom above the chamber door, where the raven chooses to perch.
How it ends (spoiler)
The raven never leaves. It stays perched on the pale bust of Pallas above the chamber door, its eyes like a dreaming demon's, and the lamplight throws its shadow across the floor. The speaker understands that his soul lies caught in that shadow. The poem closes with the sense that he will never be lifted out of it, and that his sorrow for Lenore will remain.
