The Monk: A Romance in short

The Monk is the story of a man admired for a virtue he has never had to practice. Ambrosio is raised in a monastery, taught to fear sin and to despise weakness, and praised as a saint by a city that wants one. When Matilda enters his life, his pride and his hunger give way one step at a time, and each step makes the next one easier.

What The Monk: A Romance is about

What happens when a man the whole city calls a saint meets the first real test of his virtue? The Monk opens in a packed Capuchin church in Madrid, where crowds have come to hear Ambrosio preach. He is thirty, raised from infancy by monks, and he has never left the abbey except to speak. Everyone believes he is beyond temptation.

Matthew Gregory Lewis wrote this Gothic romance in 1794, when he was about nineteen, drawing on German ghost tales, Spanish ballads, and stage melodrama. You get a story of pride, desire, and the ruin of a reputation, told one scene at a time and stopping before the ending.

이런 분께 적합해요. Readers who love candlelit abbeys, ghost stories, and tales of temptation will find a home here. It suits anyone curious about how Gothic fiction began, and who enjoys a sharp, ironic narrator.

A packed church comes to hear a saint

The book opens in the Capuchin Church in Madrid, and the narrator mocks the crowd at once. Few have come out of devotion. The women come to be seen, and the men come to see the women.

In the crush stand the talkative Leonella and her shy niece Antonia, who is scarcely fifteen. Two young noblemen, Lorenzo de Medina and his friend Don Christoval, offer them seats. Then the talk turns to the preacher. Ambrosio was left as a baby at the abbey door and has spent thirty years in study and self denial. The people call him the Man of Holiness.

When he speaks, the whole church falls silent. Listeners tremble at his talk of damnation and are comforted by his talk of a clear conscience. Lorenzo warns gently that a man tested for the first time at thirty may not stand so firmly. As Ambrosio leaves, the crowd fights over the beads of his rosary.

A reputation built on distance from the world has never yet been tested by the world.
