A burned farm turns a lord into a hunter

In the fall of 1914, Captain Fritz Schneider leads a German company through British East Africa, driving chained guides ahead with bayonets. He finds the farm of Lord Greystoke and learns that Tarzan is away. Lady Jane welcomes the officers kindly, because she does not know that Britain and Germany are at war.

Tarzan hears the news in Nairobi and races home to carry his wife to safety. When he reaches the plain, a thin line of smoke tells him he is too late.

Wasimbu, son of the faithful Muviro, hangs crucified on the living room wall, and other Waziri warriors lie dead around him. Behind a closed door Tarzan finds a body burned beyond recognition, wearing the rings of his wife. He buries the dead and swears to fight all Germans until death. Civilization, he decides, was only a thin coat he wore for Jane.

Grief turns Tarzan back into a hunter.

How it ends (spoiler)

Tarzan learns the truth when Colonel Capell shows him the papers Bertha carried. She is the Honorable Patricia Canby, a British intelligence agent, not a German spy. Schneider's diary says he burned a dead black woman's body in Jane's room, so Jane is alive and held for the German High Command. Tarzan admits how terribly he has wronged Miss Canby and agrees to return with Capell to seek his wife and make things right.
