The island in More’s book
The name appears in Utopia and draws on Greek words meaning no place. More’s island offers alternatives to European society, but its slavery and strict rules complicate any picture of perfection.
Raphael Hythloday describes islanders sharing goods rather than using money in everyday life. He also explains how they make gold into objects of little honour, including chains for enslaved people.

Later imagined societies
Later writers also imagined societies organised around different ideas of work, wealth and happiness. Such books can question the present without offering a practical plan.
In News from Nowhere, William Guest wakes in a future England and discovers that people live without money. His conversations reveal a society where work is valued for its usefulness and pleasure.
In News from Nowhere; Or, An Epoch of Rest by William Morris
What it means now
Today, a utopia can mean an ideal society or a dream dismissed as unrealistic. The word can express hope or doubt, depending on the context.
In Looking Backward, Julian West wakes in a future Boston where a national system supplies people's needs. The arrangements he learns about illustrate the kind of imagined better society now called a utopia.
In Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy
