브리틀링 씨는 끝까지 버틴다 in short
Mr. Britling Sees It Through is the story of a talkative man whose comfortable world is taken apart by a war he declared impossible. It begins as a comedy of manners, with an American visitor, a car in a hedge and a house of clever, kind people.
What 브리틀링 씨는 끝까지 버틴다 is about
Imagine stepping off a train in the Essex countryside in June 1914 and being driven home by a host who cannot steer. Within the hour, Mr. Direck, an American come to invite an English writer to lecture in Massachusetts, is sitting in a hedge, listening to his host apologize and whistle.
H. G. Wells wrote Mr. Britling Sees It Through while the First World War was still being fought. He follows one English family from the last easy summer through the first year and a half of fighting. Mr. Britling is a talkative, generous essayist with an opinion on everything. You get comedy first, then dread, then grief you can feel.
이런 분께 적합해요. Readers who love domestic comedy, English village life and clever conversation will enjoy this novel. It also suits anyone curious about ordinary families, fathers, sons and neighbours living through the First World War.

A visiting American finds an England he imagined
Mr. Direck arrives in England for the first time and loves everything that differs from home. He is the secretary of a Massachusetts society that invites thinkers to lecture, and he has come to Matching's Easy to make that offer to Mr. Britling. He also hopes to forget a girl named Mamie Nelson, who has just refused him.
The train journey feels like travelling through a book. Little fields, dog roses and thatched cottages slide past the window. Mr. Britling meets him on the platform in a baggy blue blazer and bright woven slippers. He is small, bristling and eager, like a friendly terrier, and not one of Mr. Direck's polite opening remarks survives his speed.
In the garden, Mr. Direck points at the old barn, which now holds a pianola and a dance floor, and at the farmyard, which holds no cows. England, he says, looks more like Old England than anyone could believe, yet is less like it than anyone could imagine. A country can keep its outward shape while its purpose quietly changes. An England that looks unchanged may already be hollow.
