Trimorphic Protennoia in short

The book is one speaker in three speeches. She is First Thought, and she is also Voice, Speech and Word. She stands with the Father and the Son in a world of light, and she dwells in every power and every sleeping soul.

What Trimorphic Protennoia is about

Imagine a voice that says she was there before everything began, and that she walks among sleeping people to wake them. She gives no laws and no commandments. She gives her names, and then she gives them again.

This is the speaker of Trimorphic Protennoia, a title that means the three-formed first thought. The work is anonymous. It survives in Coptic in a book found at Nag Hammadi in December 1945, and it belongs to Sethian Gnosticism. You get a divine woman who speaks as Voice, Speech and Word, a proud maker who thinks he stands alone, and a rescue told three times.

이런 분께 적합해요. You will love this if you enjoy ancient voices from Egypt, early Christian diversity, mystical poetry, myths of light and darkness, or the divine as feminine.

The 8 key ideas

A buried book speaks in three voices

In December 1945 a local farmer accidentally discovered ancient codices in a sealed clay jar near Jabal al-Tarif in Upper Egypt. Inside were leather-bound volumes containing ancient texts preserved in Coptic. The find is now called the Nag Hammadi library. Trimorphic Protennoia was among the texts unearthed at Nag Hammadi.

No author is named. The work belongs to the Sethian stream of Gnosticism, which taught that salvation comes through knowing where you truly come from. Before 1945, modern readers knew such groups mostly through church writers who described them in order to condemn them. Nag Hammadi let the thinkers speak in their own voices.

The book is built in three speeches by one speaker. In the first she is Voice, in the second Speech, in the third Word. Each speech goes back over the same ground and widens it. The whole falls into short chant-like sections, made to be spoken aloud.

Takeaway: this is one speaker, three comings, and one rescue told again each time with more light.

How to read the text beside John and today

Readers have long noticed how close this book stands to the opening of the Gospel of John, with its Word that was at the start, that comes into the dark world, and that is not recognized.

Trimorphic Protennoia에 관한 질문

It is a revelation spoken by a divine woman, the First Thought, who comes into the world three times, as Voice, Speech and Word, to wake the divine sparks in people and free them from the rule of a false maker.

What does Trimorphic Protennoia mean?

It is Greek for the three-formed first thought. Protennoia means first thought, and trimorphic refers to her three forms or modes of coming, as Voice, as Speech and as Word.

When was Trimorphic Protennoia written and where was it found?

Scholars date the Greek original between the late first and early third centuries. The work survives in Coptic among the leather-bound volumes discovered at Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt in December 1945.

How is Trimorphic Protennoia related to the Gospel of John?

Both use the idea of the divine Word that exists before creation and descends into a dark world. Scholars disagree on whether one depends on the other or whether both draw on older shared traditions.

Who are Barbelo and Yaldabaoth in the book?

Barbelo is a name for the divine Mother, the First Thought and image of the unseen Spirit. Yaldabaoth, also called Sakla and Samael, is the proud lower maker who rules chaos and builds a false world.
