At the opening of A Tale of Two Cities, the narrator describes the age through pairs of opposing claims about its wisdom, foolishness, hope, and despair. Their matching patterns hold the contradictions together.

A series of questions follows a similar structure. Each question adds another point while keeping the same steady rhythm.
In The Merchant of Venice, Shylock challenges the mistreatment of Jews with a series of questions about the physical traits and human responses they share with Christians. The repeated question patterns press his argument forward.

병렬법과 반복법은 어떻게 다른가요?
병렬법은 문법 구조를 반복하는 표현법이고, 반복은 단어와 소리, 구절, 생각을 되풀이하는 폭넓은 개념입니다. 한 구절에서 두 가지를 함께 쓸 수도 있지만, 병렬법에 꼭 같은 단어가 필요한 것은 아닙니다. 다른 단어들도 같은 문장 구조에 들어갈 수 있습니다.
병렬법과 대조법은 어떻게 다른가요?
대구법은 문법적 구조를 맞추는 기법이고, 대조법은 서로 반대되는 생각을 나란히 놓는 기법입니다. 구조를 맞추면 대조가 쉽게 드러나므로 두 기법은 함께 쓰이는 경우가 많습니다. 하지만 대구법은 비슷한 생각을 연결할 때도 쓰이므로 반드시 대조를 담는 것은 아닙니다.
