Colloquial diction

Colloquial diction uses the familiar words and expressions of everyday conversation. It can make a passage feel direct and close to ordinary speech.

Technical diction

Technical diction uses words belonging to a particular job, subject, or activity. Such words can place readers inside a specialized world.

In Moby-Dick, Ishmael’s account of processing a whale’s head uses specialized whaling terms to explain the work and its dangers.
