레 미제라블 in short
Les Misérables follows a man who leaves prison hating the world and is changed by one act of mercy. Jean Valjean builds a new life, gives it up for the truth, and spends years protecting Cosette. Around him move Fantine, crushed by poverty, Marius, torn between past and love, and Javert, who believes only in law.
What 레 미제라블 is about
What does it take to change a man whom the law has broken? In 1815 a convict with a yellow passport knocks at a bishop's door and is called brother. That one night sets off a story that crosses Waterloo, a convent wall, and the streets of Paris.
Victor Hugo wrote Les Misérables in exile and printed it in 1862 as an act of witness against the poverty that ruins women and darkens children. It follows the convict Jean Valjean, the doomed Fantine, her daughter Cosette, the student Marius and the inspector Javert.

A bishop gives his palace away and lives by love
The book opens with Bishop Myriel of D in 1815. He was once a worldly nobleman, and now the people call him Monseigneur Bienvenu, which means welcome.
He gives his palace to the hospital and moves into a small house with his sister and a servant. He keeps a thousand francs a year and gives nearly all the rest to the poor. His door is never locked, by day or by night.
He visits a dying revolutionary and argues with him about God. By the end the old man has softened, and the Bishop kneels and asks for his blessing. He believes that society is guilty for the darkness it leaves in human souls, and that the guilty need light, not blows.
Goodness that shows itself in daily habits has a power that no argument can match.
