Ralph Waldo Emerson on success

이 페이지는 도서관의 책 요약을 바탕으로 한 내용이에요. Emerson의 글은 아니에요.

Ralph Waldo Emerson thought success had to be judged by more than outward gains or other people's approval. He valued trust in one's own thought, honesty, and the freedom to grow rather than conform. His idea of compensation also meant that no achievement stood apart from its costs: every advantage brought demands, and every action carried consequences. In his view, an account of success had to include both what a person gained and what that gain required or displaced.

Approval could obscure independent thought

In Self-Reliance, Emerson described how people dismissed their own ideas, then admired those same ideas in a celebrated writer. This gave his account of achievement an inward measure: recognition by others could not replace confidence in an honestly held insight.

Growth mattered more than consistency

Emerson treated the fear of contradiction as an obstacle to truthful thought. A person who preserved an old opinion merely to protect a reputation had mistaken steadiness for integrity. Changing a view could therefore mark development rather than failure.

Compensation belonged to this life

In Compensation, Emerson opposed the belief that justice belonged only to a future world. He understood consequences as part of actions themselves, drawing parallels with balances in nature. His account of success rested on that wider belief about how life worked.
