Who Dolly Varden is
Dolly Varden belongs to the London household of Gabriel Varden, a cheerful, brave and sensible locksmith. She is pretty and playful, but her vanity and uncertainty also shape her place in the story. Her courtship unfolds alongside family quarrels, an old murder mystery and the growing threat of public violence.
Dolly Varden and the others in the story
Joe Willet courts Dolly, carrying an affection for her that begins in his boyhood. He is the son of John Willet, the landlord of the Maypole Inn. Sim Tappertit, her father's vain apprentice, is also in love with her.
Dolly's father tries to do right by others, while her mother Martha and the maid Miggs fill their home with quarrels. The Vardens' busy household offers a domestic contrast to the gathering crowds. As the Gordon Riots spread, Dolly is among those drawn toward the burning streets.
