Around the World in Eighty Days in short
This is the story of a man who bets that the world has become small enough to cross in eighty days. He sets out with his new servant, and a detective follows, sure that the traveller is a thief. Every port brings a new delay, and every delay is met with calm and money.
What Around the World in Eighty Days is about
Would you bet half your fortune that you can circle the earth in eighty days? In London in 1872, a calm gentleman named Phileas Fogg does exactly that, over a hand of whist at the Reform Club, and leaves the same night with a carpetbag and a brand new servant. He has no taste for adventure. He has a timetable, and he trusts it completely.
Around the World in Eighty Days is a novel by Jules Verne, the French writer who died in 1905. It turns the excitement of new railways, steamships and canals into a race against the clock, full of storms, wrong turns and a stubborn detective who believes the traveller is a bank thief. You get the whole route, from Suez to the plains of America.

A precise gentleman makes an impossible wager
The story opens at No. 7 Savile Row, where Phileas Fogg lives by the clock. He is rich, silent and mysterious. Nobody knows how he earned his money. Each day he eats at the same table of the Reform Club, reads the papers and plays whist. He gives his winnings to charity. He has no wife and no close friends. Even his walks follow a count of steps.
One evening his five whist partners talk about a robbery at the Bank of England, where fifty-five thousand pounds has vanished. Andrew Stuart says the world is big enough for a thief to hide in. Fogg answers in a low voice that it used to be. The Daily Telegraph has just printed a schedule that adds up to eighty days, now that a new stretch of Indian railway has opened. Stuart says storms, wrecks and train accidents spoil the sum. Fogg says all of that is counted.
Stuart bets four thousand pounds that it cannot be done, and the others join him. Fogg stakes twenty thousand pounds deposited at Baring’s, which is half of what he owns. He tells them there is no such thing as the unforeseen. He must be back in the club at a quarter to nine on Saturday, December 21. The train to Dover leaves that very night, and he finishes the hand before he goes.
A firm plan, once spoken aloud, can turn a card table joke into a life changing risk.
