About this book
What if comfort in the woods begins with carrying less, not enduring more?
In Woodcraft and Camping, George Washington Sears, who writes as Nessmuk, makes a plain case for going light. His guide brings together tents, blankets, boots, tools, canoes and cooking with a larger question: why go into the forest if the trip brings only hardship?
Sears draws on a life spent in the woods, including journeys through the Adirondacks in small, light canoes. He is no large or powerful woodsman. His advice puts comfort within reach through simple choices: carry tools that earn their place, stay warm and dry, eat well, and leave room for rest.

Rest in the woods is a real need
Sears opens with a worry that still sounds familiar. Americans, he says, work without pause, and the strain snaps something inside many of them. He agrees with the thinker Herbert Spencer that overwork ruins people.
His second point is about money. Hurried people will pay a great deal for rest, and most get cheated. The summer visitor gets about ten cents of value for each dollar spent. A rich man can hire guides and boats and never notice the cost. Sears writes for the mechanics, clerks, artists and merchants who need rest badly and can afford very little.

Who was Nessmuk?
Nessmuk was the pen name of George Washington Sears, a Pennsylvania woodsman and writer. He wrote about camping and canoeing for Forest and Stream, and a very light cedar canoe built for him became known by his name.
What is the main message of Woodcraft and Camping?
Go to the woods to rest, not to suffer. Carry little, stay calm, build a good fire and a dry camp, and cook simply. Skill and preparation turn a short vacation into real renewal.
