Informazioni sul libro
What if the person who could change a city is the woman its old habits keep from power?
In A Woman for Mayor, Helen M. Winslow puts a bold idea at the heart of a political novel: a woman might lead a city and clean up its public life. The question reaches beyond who holds office. It asks who gets to lead, and whose interests a city should serve.
Published in 1909, the novel belongs to a time when American women press for the vote and a wider public role. Winslow brings those public questions into a story of civic courage and reform. At stake are public trust, the duties of citizenship, and the personal cost of challenging habits that others find comfortable.

A luncheon turns a wish into a plan
The story opens at the monthly luncheon of the Progressive Workers, a club of Roma's leading women. Mrs. Bateman asks a blunt question. Why not change the state of affairs in this city? Barnaby Burke is running for mayor with a pack of demagogues behind him, and no decent man will stand against him.
The women list their excuses. One man is too busy. Another says no honest man would touch City Hall with a pair of tongs. Gertrude bursts out that if she were a man she would run. Mrs. Bateman smiles and asks why she should not. Women have the vote, so why not put up a woman?

What is A Woman for Mayor about?
It tells how the women of Roma put up Gertrude Van Deusen for mayor, how she wins, fights corruption in City Hall, and is targeted by men who profit from it, while a romance with her rival grows.
Who wrote A Woman for Mayor and when?
Helen M. Winslow wrote it, and the foreword bears the date May 1909. It appeared when women's voting rights were a live question in several American states.
Is A Woman for Mayor a true story?
No, Roma and its people are invented. The foreword notes that a small American city already had a woman mayor and that women served in English local government, so the idea grew from real developments.
