About this book
What if your escape from a witch leads straight to a kingdom where knitting needles threaten a throne?
Tip has had enough of serving the witch Mombi. When her magic powder brings his pumpkin-headed creation to life, the boy finds a companion in Jack Pumpkinhead—and a reason to run. In L. Frank Baum’s The Marvelous Land of Oz, their escape opens a road full of strange inventions and unlikely friends.
But the Emerald City offers no quiet refuge. General Jinjur and her army of girls challenge the Scarecrow’s rule, drawing Tip into a struggle for the throne. With the gentle Tin Woodman and the boastful Woggle-Bug among the travelers, this quick, funny adventure asks what makes someone fit to rule.

A boy escapes a witch's house
The story opens in the Gillikin Country, the northern part of Oz, where the people favor the color purple. A boy named Tip lives on a farm with an old woman called Mombi. She is a witch, and she is known across the district for her strange powers. Tip does her chores, fetches wood and tends the cattle. He has no memory of parents, and he has never known any other home.
Tip is not unhappy by nature, but he is wary of Mombi. She is sharp tongued and secretive. She keeps her magic to herself, and the neighbors fear her. Tip knows only that she took him in when he was very small, and he does not know where he came from.
