About this book
Beneath a land of green streets and strange wonders, an angry king digs a road to war.
In L. Frank Baum’s The Emerald City of Oz, Dorothy Gale wants a safe home for her family. Their Kansas farm is failing, and Uncle Henry and Aunt Em face a future weighed down by debt. Dorothy asks Ozma to welcome them into Oz, where a new life holds wonders her practical aunt finds hard to trust.
While Dorothy and her friends explore the odd corners of Oz, the Nome King tunnels beneath the desert toward the Emerald City. His sly general, Guph, gathers strange allies for an attack. Ozma loves peace and refuses to fight, but she must protect her people as the hidden danger draws closer.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A Kansas farm in trouble
Dorothy's story begins in Kansas, far from the bright colours of Oz. Dorothy Gale lives with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. The farm has never made much money, and Uncle Henry has borrowed against it. The lender now presses him, and he may lose the only home he has.
Dorothy knows a way out. She has been to Oz, and Princess Ozma, its young ruler, is her friend. Oz has no money, and nobody there starves to death or owes a debt.
