Informazioni sul libro
What if the argument over free will begins with a mistake about time?
In Time and Free Will, Henri Bergson asks whether our choices are free or fixed by what comes before. Rather than accept the usual terms of this quarrel, he examines how we describe inner life. Can feelings really be measured? Does time consist of separate moments placed side by side?
His answer centres on duration: time as we live it, rather than time pictured as a line. Across three chapters, Bergson moves from the intensity of feelings to number, space and the claims of determinism. At stake is how we understand a choice that expresses the whole person, with past experience, feelings and hopes bound together.
Cosa scoprirai
- Feelings beyond measurement Question whether a deeper sorrow or greater joy differs in kind rather than amount.
- Time as you live it Explore duration, Bergson’s alternative to a line of separate moments laid out in space.
- The hidden demands of counting Follow the argument that counting requires us to hold things apart and treat them as alike.
- A challenge to determinism Examine Bergson’s claim that arguments against freedom borrow a misleading picture from space.
- Freedom and the whole self Consider a free act as an expression of your past, feelings and hopes together.

In breve
A clock strikes four, and a moment later you can still say so, though you never counted the strokes as they sounded. Henri Bergson starts from small facts like this to ask a very large question.

Stronger feelings differ in kind, not size
We say one pain is twice as bad as another. Bergson asks what the words mean. A number is greater than another because it contains it, yet a strong sensation does not contain a weak one.
Some thinkers say there are two sorts of quantity, one measurable and one not. Bergson finds this a trick of words. We picture intensity as a coiled spring, a compressed space waiting to unfold, so we quietly borrow an image from space. Nor does the strength of the outside cause help, since we often know nothing about the cause at all.

What is Time and Free Will about?
It argues that the debate over free will rests on confusing time with space. Bergson studies feelings, number, clocks and motion to show that lived duration is qualitative, and that a free act expresses the whole self.
What does Bergson mean by pure duration?
Pure duration is time as we live it, where past and present blend like notes in a melody. It is not a row of equal moments, and it cannot be measured without turning it into space.
What is the main message of Time and Free Will?
Freedom is a fact of experience. Determinism and many definitions of freedom both treat time as a line already drawn, but a free act happens in time as it passes, and it expresses the deep self.
