About this book
A sailor risks the sea for wealth, while a storyteller stakes her life on what happens next.
In Sindbad the Sailor, & Other Stories from the Arabian Nights, a poor Baghdad porter pauses outside a rich man's house. His complaint about unfair fortune brings him face to face with Sindbad the Sailor, whose seven voyages lead across dangerous seas to strange islands and sudden turns of luck.
Around these adventures, Shahrazad tells King Shahriyar stories to save herself and other women, stopping each night at dawn. Genies enter ordinary lives, merchants face uncertain fortunes, and Harun al-Rashid walks Baghdad in disguise with his vizier Jafar. One tale opens into another, keeping the next wonder just within reach.

A rich merchant tells his strange story
The book opens in Baghdad. A merchant called Sindbad the Sailor lives in great splendor, and nobody knows where his money comes from. His house is full of attendants. His garden is wide and lovely. His guests eat and drink as if the supply could never end.
One day a poor man, also named Sindbad, comes to him and recites about the different lots God assigns to people. The merchant is delighted. He decides to tell the story of his life, so that everyone can stop wondering about his wealth. He holds seven receptions on seven days, and he speaks only to his humble namesake.
