Informazioni sul libro
What can a few surviving lines reveal about love, jealousy, and the women Sappho longs for?
Almost all of Sappho's poetry is lost. One complete poem, longer pieces, and scraps remain. In Sappho: Memoir, Text, Selected Renderings, and a Literal Translation, Henry Thornton Wharton brings these traces together. His memoir separates evidence from legend, introducing the poet of Lesbos without pretending that every question about her life has an answer.
The Greek text, close prose translations, and selected English verse renderings sit together under each poem or fragment. A hymn asks Aphrodite to ease the pain of longing. Another poem watches a man listening to a woman's speech and laughter. Elsewhere, Atthis, Anactoria, and Gongyla appear as women Sappho loves, admires, or misses.

Wharton gathers every surviving word for English readers
Wharton's first claim is simple. Sappho should not be only a name, known through two hymns. English readers had grown content to believe that nothing else of hers survived, and he sets out to change that. He translates every fragment that Bergk, her latest German editor, thought could be hers. That comes to one hundred and seventy pieces, many of them tiny.
Each piece follows the same plan. First comes the Greek, then a literal English prose version, then the verse translations Wharton thinks worth keeping. Last comes a note that names the ancient writer who quoted the line. Without grammarians and lexicographers quoting her, Wharton says, not a word of hers would be left.

What is Wharton's Sappho about?
It presents the life of the poet Sappho and every fragment of her work then known. Each fragment comes in Greek, in a literal prose version, in the best verse translations and with a note naming the ancient writer who preserved it.
Did Sappho really leap from the cliff of Leucas for Phaon?
Wharton argues that the story has no firm historical basis. It appears only in Attic comedy more than two centuries after her time, and no ancient author says what came of the leap. He treats it as legend.
Why do so few of Sappho's poems survive?
Wharton explains that only quotations by grammarians, lexicographers and other ancient writers kept her lines alive. Her works seem whole until about the third century A.D., and some say zealous opponents of the old religion destroyed them.
