What happens when the wish to get ahead pulls two brothers away from each other?
In Friedrich Huch’s Pitt and Fox, two brothers follow paths that run beside each other and often clash. Love, ambition and rivalry shape their lives, testing a bond that neither stands apart from. Their story turns on the tension between family ties and personal desire: how to pursue what you want when your brother has wishes of his own.
Huch brings an inward, psychological eye to this family conflict. The wish to rise, to win recognition or to succeed pushes the brothers in different directions, while love complicates their rivalry. For readers drawn to the feelings behind a choice, the novel offers a close look at lives pulled between affection and competition.

Two brothers named by a mirror
The novel begins with names. A small boy calls his reflection Pitt, and the family adopts it as his name. His younger brother is called Fox, and he resists the name but cannot shake it, so he claims that a descendant of the famous Fox is his godfather and will leave him a fortune.
Fox tells grand stories in which he is the hero. Pitt listens with bored gray eyes and says it happened to him, only the other way around. Where Fox attacks, Pitt hides, pressing himself against a fence until his enemies take him for a post. Pitt also carries a large mirror from room to room in felt slippers and likes to sit before it and think of nothing.
