Informazioni sul libro
What does it take to catch an outlaw when the nearest courthouse is far beyond the horizon?
In Hands Up, Colorado lawman D. J. Cook recounts his pursuit of thieves, robbers and killers across the American West. His cases lead through mining camps, along stagecoach roads and over cattle ranges. In this scattered world, a criminal can leave town and cross into another territory before the law catches up.
As head of the Rocky Mountain Detective Association, Cook works where regular law is thin. Stock owners and others turn to the association for protection. His account brings daring captures into view, but patience matters more than gunfire. The challenge is to track people across rough country by understanding their habits, hiding places and mistakes.

Rebel raiders ride north and lose everything
The book begins with John Reynolds, who dies in a dugout near Taos in 1871 and gives his partner Albert Brown directions to a hidden treasure. To explain the money, Cook goes back to 1864. James Reynolds, a Confederate irregular, leads a small band from northern Texas toward Denver. He dreams of burning the town.
On the Santa Fe Trail the gang captures a wagon train and takes about forty thousand dollars. Fourteen men leave in anger. The rest reach the goldfields and find no recruits. They rob a coach in South Park and boast of a Confederate army behind them. The claim is false, but it spreads alarm across the mining camps.
