Informazioni sul libro
What holds a ship together when the sea turns hostile and the crew no longer trusts its officers?
John Pathurst boards the Elsinore as a passenger, not a sailor. A writer used to comfort, he enters a world of sails, watches and hard labor. As the big sailing ship makes its long voyage toward Cape Horn, he must learn what life at sea demands.
In Jack London's The Mutiny of the Elsinore, danger comes from more than weather. Mr. Pike embodies a harsh style of command, while Miss West adds feeling and strain to life aboard. Officers and sailors watch each other warily. Cold, storms and distrust test the strength of those who command—and those expected to obey.

A reluctant passenger boards a ship he distrusts
On a bitter March morning in 1913, John Pathurst waits in a taxi on a Baltimore pier for a tug that does not come. He waits four hours. Beside him a fox terrier puppy named Possum whines inside his coat, a farewell joke from his friend Galbraith.
Under the irritation lies a deeper tiredness. Pathurst is thirty, praised for a play and several books of verse, and rich beyond his needs. Life has lost its flavor. He has prescribed a sea voyage as a cure, and he already doubts the medicine.

What is The Mutiny of the Elsinore about?
It follows John Pathurst, a wealthy writer, on a sailing voyage from Baltimore to Seattle around Cape Horn. Aboard a coal-laden ship he meets a calm captain, hard mates, the captain's daughter Margaret, and a crew of damaged men.
Who is Margaret West in The Mutiny of the Elsinore?
Margaret is Captain West's daughter, who joins the voyage at the last minute. She is healthy, practical, musical, and skilled at sea life, and her cheerful manner changes Pathurst's view of the voyage and of women.
Why is Captain West called the Samurai?
Pathurst borrows the word from H. G. Wells's utopia, where Samurai are a wise ruling class. He uses it for the captain after a storm, when West's calm voice commands the whole ship.
