About this book
How does a quarrel over land and a single village become a war that scatters a people?
In the spring of 1832, Black Hawk leads about a thousand men, women and children across the Mississippi into Illinois. Frank Everett Stevens follows the Sauk leader into a conflict over land, treaties and home. Settlers, governors, militia and army officers enter the story, while the people crossing the river face far more than a military struggle.
The Black Hawk War Including a Review of Black Hawk's Life joins a campaign history with the life of its central figure. Stevens takes you from Saukenuk, Black Hawk's birthplace, to the disputed Treaty of St. Louis and the chase through Illinois and Wisconsin. This 1903 account brings an older Illinois historian's perspective to the region's conflict.

A Sauk boy rises through raids and war
Black Hawk is born in 1767 at the Sauk village on Rock River. His father, Pyesa, is the tribe's medicine man. Stevens insists that Black Hawk was a brave, made so by deeds, and never a chief of the Sauk nation.
At fifteen Black Hawk wounds an enemy and earns the right to paint his face and wear feathers. Soon he leads a party of seven against a band of one hundred Osages. In 1786 he nearly destroys another Osage force, and that blow brings a long peace between the two peoples.

What is The Black Hawk War by Frank E. Stevens about?
It tells the story of the 1832 conflict between Illinois militia, army regulars and Black Hawk's band of Sauk, with a review of Black Hawk's earlier life, the treaties behind the war and a day-by-day account of marches and battles.
Was Black Hawk a chief of the Sauk?
Stevens says no. He argues that Black Hawk was a brave whose standing rested on his skill as a warrior, while Keokuk and Pashepaho held recognized chief roles among the Sauk people.
What was the treaty of 1804 and why does it matter?
It was a treaty signed at St. Louis by Governor Harrison and Sauk and Fox chiefs, ceding land east of the Mississippi for yearly goods. Black Hawk said it was never properly understood, and the dispute led to war.
