Informazioni sul libro
What do people ask of their gods when health, home and harvest feel uncertain?
Sumerian Hymns from Cuneiform Texts gathers ancient devotional poetry from southern Mesopotamia, the land of the earliest cities. Frederick Augustus Vanderburgh brings readers close to songs preserved in wedge-shaped writing on clay tablets. Here, worshippers praise divine powers and ask for mercy, protection and forgiveness.
The collection opens a window onto worship shaped by sky, storm, sun, water and grain. Its songs of praise and prayers for help belong to temples, festivals and offerings, rather than private reading. Their repeated lines invite you to imagine a priest or gathered group speaking them aloud.

Four ancient tablets wait for a translator
In 1902 the British Museum printed a volume of copies of clay tablets from Babylonia. It held hymns to several gods. Vanderburgh, writing in New York in 1907, chooses four of them to translate and explain.
What sets these four apart? Each is written in Sumerian alone, with no Assyrian version set beside it. Vanderburgh takes that as a sign of great age. It also makes the hymns far more taxing to translate, because Sumerian is not a Semitic language and the scribes left no helping translation in the margin.

What is Sumerian Hymns from Cuneiform Texts about?
It presents four ancient hymns from clay tablets in the British Museum, to Bel, Sin the moon god, Adad the storm god and Tammuz. Each comes with its signs, an English translation and a line by line commentary.
Who are Bel, Sin, Adad and Tammuz?
They are gods of ancient Babylonia. Bel is lord of the earth and father of the lands, Sin is the moon, Adad is the storm and rain, and Tammuz is the young god of plant growth who dies each summer.
Why does the book say the hymns are monolingual?
Each tablet is written only in Sumerian, with no Assyrian translation beside it. The author takes this as a sign of great age, and it also means the language had to be read without any helping glosses.
