Informazioni sul libro
What if prayer is not a search for a finished God, but a way of helping to shape one?
In The Book of Hours, Rainer Maria Rilke turns prayer into poetry about work, loneliness, and the sacred. The Book of Monkish Life begins with a young Russian monk painting icons in his cell. He addresses a divine presence that, within these poems, still needs human hands.
The Book of Pilgrimage takes the search from the cell to the road. The Book of Poverty and Death turns toward the city, the poor, and the wish for a death that belongs to each person. Across these changing speakers and settings, Rilke explores devotion without the fixed creed of any one church.

A monk paints God in widening rings
The first book opens with a man who feels an hour touch him like a clear stroke of metal. He says he lives his life in rings that grow wider and spread over all things. He may never complete the last ring, but he means to try.
The speaker is a monk and an icon painter, and the rings are how he works. He circles God like an ancient tower and cannot tell whether he is a falcon, a storm or a great song. When he looks deep into himself, his own God is dark, like a fabric of a hundred roots that drinks in silence. He does not claim to see God clearly. Knowledge is partial, and the poems accept that from the start.

What is The Book of Hours about?
It is a cycle of prayer poems spoken by a Russian monk who paints icons. Across three books he speaks to God about work, solitude, pilgrimage, poverty and death, and he pictures God as dark, unfinished and close.
Who is the speaker in The Book of Hours?
The speaker is a monk and icon painter, the voice of a quiet cell. Rilke gives him a changing role as builder, pilgrim and witness to the poor, so his voice is a character and not Rilke himself.
What are the three books in The Book of Hours?
They are The Book of Monastic Life from 1899, The Book of Pilgrimage from 1901, and The Book of Poverty and Death from 1903. Each has its own setting, moving from cell to road to the city and the poor.
