About this book
What does an honest boy do when the people with power over him refuse to play fair?
Buck Bradford will not quietly accept unfair treatment. Living under the thumb of people who misuse their power, he sets out to make his own way. In Oliver Optic’s Down the River; Or, Buck Bradford and His Tyrants, a spirited boy faces the challenge of standing up for himself without losing his honesty.
The Mississippi opens a wider world, a road of trade and travel crowded with steamboats, flatboats, rafts, and people of every sort. For Buck, the river is a way forward. His adventures test courage and self-reliance, while Optic’s plain storytelling keeps questions of right and wrong close to the action.

Buck says no and stands his ground
The story opens on a refusal. Ham Fishley, spoiled and seventeen, orders Buck to black his boots, and Buck tells him to do it himself. For three years the Fishleys have worked Buck from morning to night and kept him out of school, while his brother Clarence is away in New Orleans.
The breaking point comes in the kitchen. Mrs. Fishley drags Buck's frail sister Flora out of her chair over burned flapjacks. Buck throws the woman halfway across the room and warns her never to touch Flora again.
