Informazioni sul libro
What waits beneath the hills, beside a lonely thorn tree, or on an Irish road after dark?
In Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry, W. B. Yeats gathers a patchwork of stories about an unseen world. Fairies carry off children, leprechauns guard hidden gold, and restless ghosts return to trouble the living. These tales move between laughter, fear and tenderness, giving familiar places a strange and unsettling life.
The collection ranges from fairy troops and changelings to solitary spirits, ghosts, priests, witches and giants. Stories also touch on Finn MacCool and the old warriors. Lonely roads and old forts become places of strange encounters. Beneath the wonders lie ordinary concerns: hunger, land, marriage, pride and luck, and the ways people explain illness and death.

Yeats trusts the storyteller over the scientist
Yeats opens with a preface that argues for a way of listening. He says Irish country people still live among fairies, ghosts and mermaids, while the English fairies vanished long ago. A man in County Sligo answers a question about fairies by saying he has been troubled by them. Yeats treats such answers as plain facts about a living belief.
He advises any collector to be tactful and to make friends with children and old men. Old women know the most but say the least, because the fairies resent being talked about. His hero is Paddy Flynn, a small bright-eyed old man in a leaky cottage in Sligo. Paddy is deeply pious, yet he says he has seen the Banshee beating the river with its hands.

What is Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry about?
It is a collection of Irish fairy tales, ghost stories, witch legends and folk poems, gathered by W. B. Yeats from earlier collectors and sorted by kind of spirit, from fairies and ghosts to saints and giants.
Did W. B. Yeats write these stories himself?
Mostly no. Yeats chose and arranged tales by writers such as Croker, Lady Wilde, Kennedy, Carleton and Hyde, added poems by others and a few of his own, and wrote the preface and the notes.
What is a banshee in Irish folklore?
A banshee is a fairy woman attached to old families who wails before a death. Yeats notes that the funeral cry of the peasantry, called the keen, is said to imitate her voice.
