The Symposium, Part V: riassunto

Part V di 9 · 5 min per leggere la parte

In V, Socrates challenges Critobulus in a beauty contest by arguing that bodily features are beautiful when they perform their functions well. Critobulus concedes the argument but wins every secret vote, prompting Socrates to joke that his rival’s beauty corrupts the judges.

Cosa succede

  1. Callias invites Critobulus to compete against Socrates for the beauty prize, and Critobulus accepts.
  2. Under questioning, Critobulus defines beauty through fitness for a purpose, including tools and animals.
  3. Socrates applies this definition to his projecting eyes, broad nostrils, snub nose, large mouth, and thick lips.
  4. Socrates adds that the Sileni resemble him, and Critobulus concedes while requesting a secret ballot.
  5. The boy and girl record the votes, and Socrates brings the lampstand close to Critobulus.
  6. Critobulus receives every vote, and Socrates jokes that his beauty has corrupted the decision.
