A chi è rivolto

For readers who love Russian fiction, stories of pilgrims and wanderers, and honest argument about faith and doubt. A strong narrating voice brings the search for God and human brotherhood to life.

Che cos’è questo libro

The Confession is a short novel by Maksim Gorky, the Russian writer who rose from poverty to fame. It was published in 1908, in the years after the failed revolution of 1905, when many thinkers in Russia were asking what could hold a broken society together. Gorky answers through the voice of a man on the road. The narrator is Matvei, a poor wanderer who tells the story of his life as a long search for God.

The book is built like a confession, spoken plainly by a man who has seen hunger, cruelty, monasteries, pilgrim roads and village crowds. He asks hard questions. Where is God when ordinary people suffer? Is God a ruler above us, or something found among us? You get a picture of Russian folk life, a restless and honest narrator, and an argument about faith that Gorky cared about deeply. Let us begin with the man himself and the world that shaped his questions.

A poor man begins to ask questions

The story opens with Matvei looking back over his life. He comes from the poorest layer of Russian society, the world of peasants, labourers and people who own nothing. From early on he learns that life is hard and that the powerful are seldom gentle. He does not begin as a rebel or a philosopher. He begins as a man who simply wants to understand why things are as they are.

The church teaches that God is good and sees everything. Matvei hears this from childhood, as nearly everyone around him does. Yet what he sees in villages and towns does not match it. People work to exhaustion and still go hungry. They are cheated by their betters and sometimes cruel to each other. A boy who looks closely at such a world will start to wonder.

This is the heart of the opening. Matvei is not mocking religion. He wants it to be true, and that is why the gap between what he is taught and what he sees hurts him so much. His questions are simple, and they stay simple through the whole book. Is God near or far? Does God care? And if God cares, why is there so much pain among those who pray the hardest?

Gorky gives these questions the weight of real life by tying them to hunger, work and the small events of village days. Matvei does not think in abstract terms. He thinks about the people he knows, and about what might help them. That grounding keeps the book from feeling like a sermon. We follow a man whose faith is a daily need, like bread, and whose doubt is a wound. His search starts there, and it will take him far from home.

As you listen, notice how often Matvei measures any teaching against the faces of the poor. That test never leaves him.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.

Questions about La confessione

What is The Confession by Gorky about?

It tells the story of Matvei, a poor Russian wanderer who walks the roads in search of God. He meets pilgrims, monks and villagers, and tests each idea of faith against the suffering and kindness he sees.

When was The Confession written?

Gorky published it in 1908, after the failed 1905 revolution. It is a work of fiction, though it draws on real pilgrim life in Russia and on ideas Gorky held at the time.

What is god-building in Gorky's book?

God-building was an idea among some Russian socialists, including Gorky, that the awe and hope of religion could be turned toward the collective strength of the people. The Confession tells this idea as a story.

Is The Confession hard to read?

No. It is short and told in a plain, speaking voice by a first-person narrator. The road scenes and meetings keep the story clear.

What is the main message of The Confession?

The book suggests that the search for God should be judged by what it does for ordinary people. Gorky leans toward the idea that the real force of the divine lies in human brotherhood.
