For readers who enjoy historical fiction, court intrigue and a plot built on a dangerous secret, and anyone curious about Elizabeth I.
Che cos’è questo libro
Kenilworth is a historical novel by Walter Scott, first published in 1821. It is set in England in the summer of 1575, when Queen Elizabeth I was in the seventeenth year of her reign. Scott was already the most popular novelist of his day, and here he turns from Scotland to the Tudor court, with its jealous nobles, its spies and its glittering public shows.
The story gathers around a secret. Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, is the queen's favourite and the most powerful man at court. Many think he may marry her. But he has already married a country girl named Amy Robsart, and he hides her away so that the queen will not learn the truth. Around this secret move a loyal old suitor, a clever blacksmith, a scheming servant and a rival earl, all pulled toward the great castle of Kenilworth.
You get an adventure, a love story and a lively picture of Elizabethan England. You also get a close look at what ambition does to people who have almost everything. Scott bends some historical facts for the sake of his plot, and he does it openly, to make a better tale. Let us begin where the story begins, in a country inn in Berkshire, where a stranger comes home to trouble.

A stranger arrives at the Black Bear
The novel opens at the Black Bear, an inn in the village of Cumnor, near Oxford. Its landlord is Giles Gosling, a cheerful, sharp man who knows everyone and enjoys talking. The inn is full of travellers and local gossip, and Scott uses the room to introduce the setting before any great person appears. We hear the talk of the day, the quarrels over religion and the grumbling about the great lords.
In walks a swaggering soldier named Michael Lambourne, who is the landlord's nephew. He left home as a wild young man and has come back with big stories and empty pockets. Giles is not pleased to see him, since the boy was always a source of trouble. Lambourne has the look of a man who will do almost anything for money, and that matters later.
Another guest at the inn is Edmund Tressilian, a quiet, serious gentleman who has travelled far and looks worn by worry. He does not join in the noise. He is looking for someone, and he has little time for chatter. The contrast between the loud Lambourne and the grave Tressilian sets up two kinds of men who will cross paths again and again.
Scott also plants a hint of a nearby house. Cumnor Place, an old building once owned by monks, is now rented by a gloomy man named Anthony Foster. Local people whisper about it. They say strange things happen there, and that a lady is kept within its walls. The village talk is half rumour, but it points the way the plot will go.
This first section shows how Scott likes to work. He starts with ordinary people in an ordinary place and lets the great events seep in from the edges. By the time the court appears, you already know the countryside it will touch.
