In Chapter 16, Zadig wins the combat contest for Astarte’s hand and Babylon’s throne, but Itobad steals his armor and claims the victory before the tests of wisdom begin. Mistaken for the defeated Itobad and unable to reach the queen, Zadig retreats to the Euphrates and questions the justice of Providence.

Što se događa

  1. The Babylonians establish anonymous contests of courage and wisdom to choose Astarte’s husband and their sovereign.
  2. Zadig enters secretly, and Cador brings him armor and a horse sent by Astarte.
  3. Itobad suffers four humiliating defeats, while Zadig and Prince Hottam each overcome four opponents.
  4. Zadig defeats Hottam in mounted combat and sword fighting, winning the crowd’s approval.
  5. During the night, Itobad exchanges their armor and devices, then claims recognition as the victorious champion.
  6. Zadig faces public mockery, retreats to the Euphrates, condemns his fate, and sells the green armor for a cloak and cap.
