  2. He accelerates through days and seasons as trees, buildings, and the landscape change around him.
  3. Despite fearing a collision with solid matter, he stops abruptly and lands beside his overturned machine in a hailstorm.
  4. He studies a huge white sphinx and imagines that future humanity might be cruel and powerful.
  5. He struggles with the machine to prepare an escape, then pauses as his curiosity returns.
  6. Robed figures watch him, and an approaching man's small size and frail beauty restore his confidence.
