In Chapter 5, Sir Kenneth’s chapel vigil is interrupted by two strangely dressed dwarfs whose claims and laughter unsettle his solemn thoughts before a voice dismisses them. He returns to the cave with the hermit, hears him punish himself, and remains for two more days after conversations whose contents are not given.

Što se događa

  1. Sir Kenneth kneels in darkness, absorbed in gratitude to Heaven and Lady Edith, until a whistle interrupts him.
  2. Nectabanus and Guenevra emerge through a trapdoor, carry lamps, sweep awkwardly, and laugh at the knight.
  3. The pair offer conflicting accounts of their identities before an unseen speaker orders them away.
  4. The hermit asks Sir Kenneth to guide him back through the passages while his eyes remain covered.
  5. In the cave, the hermit dismisses the knight and scourges himself, while Sir Kenneth prays and sleeps.
  6. Morning conversations with the hermit lead Sir Kenneth to stay two more days without returning to the chapel.
