Sažetak djela The Prince, Chapter 16

Chapter 16 od 28 · 4 min za čitanje poglavlja

In Chapter 16, the speaker argues that a ruling prince should accept a reputation for stinginess rather than spend heavily to appear generous and burden his subjects with taxes. He distinguishes rulers from seekers of power, and spending one's own resources from distributing wealth taken from others.

Što se događa

  1. The speaker argues that conspicuous generosity exhausts resources, forces heavier taxes, and makes a prince hated or despised.
  2. He presents thrift as a way to finance defense and projects without taking more from subjects.
  3. Pope Julius II and the King of Spain illustrate the practical benefits of avoiding costly generosity.
  4. Caesar's example prompts a distinction between seeking power, when generosity helps, and holding power, when it becomes dangerous.
  5. The speaker permits generosity with other people's wealth, especially when plunder supports an army.
  6. He concludes that blame for stinginess is safer than the hatred produced by greedy fundraising.
