Who Miss Prism is
Miss Prism teaches Cecily Cardew, the eighteen-year-old ward of Jack Worthing, at his manor house in Hertfordshire. She appears in the country garden, where Cecily is studying German under her supervision.
Stern and fussy, Miss Prism favors moral lessons and cautionary novels. Through her teaching, the play pokes fun at the Victorian taste for duty and moral lectures.
Miss Prism and the others in the story
Miss Prism's connection with Cecily places a lover of moral instruction beside a young woman with a vivid imagination. Cecily writes a romance in her diary, while her governess brings lessons and caution into the country setting.
Miss Prism also has a quiet fondness for Canon Chasuble, the gentle rector of the local parish. When he visits, he pays her nervous compliments, revealing a softer side to the world of lessons and duty.
