Who Mr Elliot is
Mr Elliot is heir to Sir Walter Elliot's baronetcy, giving him a place in the family's concern with rank. Years earlier, he neglects the family and marries for money, but in Bath he renews his connection with them. He makes himself agreeable to Sir Walter and Elizabeth, presenting a charming face to the people he once neglected.
Mr Elliot and the others in the story
Mr Elliot pays marked attention to Anne, whose father and elder sister usually give her little consideration. Lady Russell warmly approves of him, but Anne does not share her confidence. Anne notices how beautifully he speaks, yet finds something too smooth in his manner. Her uncertainty makes his presence part of the novel's concern with judgment, and with the difference between charm and goodness.
