Sažetak djela Middlemarch (Chapter 59)

Chapter 59 od 88 · Book 6: The Widow and the Wife · 5 min čitanja: chapter

In Chapter 59, Fred Vincy passes gossip about Mr. Casaubon’s will to Rosamond, who tells Will Ladislaw despite Lydgate’s warning to remain silent. Will learns that marrying Dorothea costs her property, condemns the condition as an insult to them both, and angrily rejects Rosamond’s talk of a wedding.

Što se događa

  1. At Lowick Parsonage, Fred hears the women discuss Mr. Casaubon’s codicil and learns that Mr. Farebrother already knows about it.
  2. Fred mentions the gossip to Rosamond after seeing Ladislaw leave her house.
  3. Lydgate warns Rosamond against mentioning the matter to Will because it causes him pain.
  4. While Lydgate is absent, Rosamond teases Will and reveals that Dorothea loses her property if she marries him.
  5. Will calls the condition insulting, declares that Rosamond cannot expect news of a wedding, and leaves.
  6. Rosamond broods over her dissatisfaction and recalls her father’s refusal of her secret request for financial help.
