Chapter 11 od 38 · 26 min čitanja: chapter

In Chapter 11, Jane Eyre reaches Thornfield, receives a kind welcome from Mrs. Fairfax, and begins teaching Adèle, the ward of the absent owner, Mr. Rochester. Her new surroundings encourage hope and a sense of belonging, while a strange laugh upstairs interrupts the comfort of her first day.

Što se događa

  1. After an anxious wait at Millcote, Jane travels slowly to Thornfield, where Mrs. Fairfax welcomes her warmly.
  2. The next morning, Jane learns that Mrs. Fairfax is the housekeeper and Mr. Rochester owns Thornfield.
  3. Jane meets Adèle and speaks French with her, hearing about her mother, former carers, and journey to England.
  4. Jane begins lessons in the library, finding Adèle obedient but unaccustomed to steady work.
  5. Mrs. Fairfax shows Jane the house and describes Mr. Rochester as a good employer whose manner takes effort to understand.
  6. Jane hears unsettling laughter upstairs; Mrs. Fairfax attributes it to Grace Poole, who appears when called.
