Who Cacambo is
Cacambo becomes Candide's servant at Cadiz, as his master prepares to sail with an army bound for South America. He is half Spanish and half native of Tucumán, and he knows the New World.
His cheerful manner goes with practical ability, making him better at dealing with trouble than Candide. Where his master struggles to understand what happens around him, Cacambo brings the resourcefulness of someone who has learned to cope.
Cacambo and the others in the story
Cacambo accompanies Candide as travel brings fresh dangers, escapes and encounters with unfamiliar societies. The two escape through Paraguay, hide from pursuers and push onward into unexplored country.
Together they travel by canoe down an underground river and reach Eldorado, a hidden land in the Andes. Their shared journey places Cacambo beside Candide as his master encounters a society unlike the troubled places he already knows.
