Sažetak djela Brothers (Chapter 9)

Chapter 9 od 43 · 13 min čitanja: chapter

In Chapter 9, Mark Samphire begins his first sermon at King’s Charteris with power, but his stammer returns and forces him from the pulpit. His failure brings affection from the villagers, exposes his struggle with ambition, and leads Betty Kirtling to affirm that her friendship does not depend on his success.

Što se događa

  1. Mark tells Archie that he hopes to preach well, and learns that Betty comes especially to hear him.
  2. Before the service, Mark examines his ambition, his love for Betty, and his feelings about Archie’s success.
  3. Mark captivates the congregation, but his stammer returns, a girl laughs, and he cannot finish his sermon.
  4. The villagers offer sympathy, while Mark tells Archie he intends to keep trying despite doubts about his fitness to preach.
  5. At Mrs. Corrance’s house, Mark considers how her garden transforms neglected ground into beauty.
  6. Betty assures Mark that success does not determine her friendship; he blesses her and abruptly leaves.
